What are the MOM employer
requirements for hiring an FDW?
As an employer, you need to meet the
eligibility criteria before hiring a foreign domestic worker
(FDW).To hire an FDW, you must be 21 years old and above. Not be an
undischarged bankrupt and have the mental capacity to fully
understand and discharge your responsibility as an employer. Your
financial ability to hire, maintain and upkeep the FDW in an
acceptable accommodation. If you are a first time FDW employer, you
must attend an Employer Orientation Programme (EOP) before you
apply for an FDW.
What are the cost
involved in hiring a maid?
The cost to hire a foreign domestic
worker will range from SGD450-600 depending on the maid’s
experience and their country of origin. There is also a maid levy
payment fee (MOM regulated) of $265 normal rate or $60 for
concessionary rate by GIRO.
What is the Maid
Levy?
The normal rate of Maid’s levy is $265 per month. There is a
concession rate of $60 per month only applicable for employers who
engage the maid for the purpose to look after an elderly above
the age of 65 or a Singaporean child under the age of 16,
and person with disabilities.
The maids levy is to be paid by employers monthly and should
be done through GIRO payments. The work permit of the maid will be
cancelled if the employer fail to maintain the GIRO
payment.
How long does it take to
engage a maid?
Depending on the country of origin of
the maid, the application processes of the Work Permit will take
about 2 week to 4 weeks or more for the maid to arrive and start
working for the employer.
For any first time Foreign Domestic Worker working in
Singapore for the first time need to attend a one day the Settling
In Programme (SIP) upon her arrival before she can start work.
She will also be required to pass her medical examination before
her work permit will be issued within 14 days of arriving in
Singapore.
What is a security
bond?
The security bond of $5,000 is payable
by employers of foreign domestic workers. The purpose is to ensure
that employer take up their responsible for the upkeep of the maid
and also ensures prompt salary payment as well as timely
repatriation of the foreign domestic workers.
A security bond is a binding pledge to pay the government if you
break the law or the conditions governing the employment of a maid.
The bonds usually take the form of an insurance. The insurers
guarantee to pay the government should you break the rules; then
the insurers pursue you for the money. The employer has to bear the
cost for the bond.
You will be discharged from the security bond liability
only if you meet all of these conditions:
- You have cancelled the Work Permit.
- The helper has returned home.
- You did not breach any of the conditions of the security
bond.
Your security bond may be forfeited if:
- You or your helper violate any of the conditions of the
Work Permit or security bond.
- You don't pay her salary on time.
- You fail to send her back when her Work Permit is expired,
revoked or cancelled, or if she goes missing.
- If the helper goes missing, half of the security bond
($2,500) will be forfeited if you have made reasonable effort to
locate her and have filed a police report.
You will not be liable for your helper's violations
(such as those relating to pregnancy) if you can prove that you
have:
- Informed her of the Work Permit conditions she must comply
with.
- Reported a violation when you first become aware of
it.
What are the insurance
coverage needed for maid?
The employer need to secure and bear
with the medical and personal accident insurance for the maid
before she can arrive in Singapore as part of the obligations.
Medical insurance
A medical insurance with coverage of at least $15,000 per year for
inpatient care and day surgery.
Personal accident insurance
A personal accident insurance with a minimum coverage of
$40,000.
How can all the different
security bond, insurance coverage, medical checkup be
made?
They are be purchased separately by
the employer to comply to the regulations or comprehensively
